Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more people or parties intended to reach an understanding, resolve points of difference, to gain advantage for an individual or collective, or to craft outcomes to satisfy various interests. Negotiating is about balancing your interests vs. the other party’s interests vs. both party’s interests. We will look at applying negotiating skills in two common and important scenarios that all PhD students will face:
- Preparing to leave your PI (academia) and transitioning to a professional job outside of academia.
- Ensuring that you are getting the best total compensation for the value you bring to your new job and company.
